What are some of the similarities and differences between the way Mona Chang and Maxine Hong Kingston handle their changes from Chinese culture to American?
Some similarities between how Mona Chang and Maxine Hong Kingston handle their changes is that they pretend to be "American", following the ways of the society in which they live in. In order to fit in, both Mona and Maxine conceal a part of their lives that they don't want to be exposed to their peers by lying and not telling the truth. Also, both Mona and Maxine have arguments with their moms about how everything originated from the Chinese such as tomatoes and stories. One difference between Mona and Maxine is the way that they express their feelings about having a chinese heritage in an American society. While Maxine lets her thoughts and ideas out by writing, Mona responds more freely, and tells some of her troubles and difficulties to her friends and to Sherman.
